Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy Oedema

Massage therapy during pregnancy can be beneficial, but timing and safety precautions are essential to ensure the well-being of both the mother and baby. Here’s a general guide:

When to Get a Massage During Pregnancy:

  • First Trimester (0–12 weeks): Some therapists recommend waiting until the second trimester due to the increased risk of miscarriage during the first trimester. However, if performed safely by a trained prenatal massage therapist, gentle relaxation massages may be fine.
  • Second Trimester (13–27 weeks): This is often the most comfortable and ideal time for prenatal massage. It helps alleviate back pain, swelling, and stress.
  • Third Trimester (28 weeks–birth): Massage can provide relief from increased discomfort as the baby grows. It helps reduce swelling, ease pelvic pain, and prepare the body for labor.

Precautions

  1. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting massage therapy.
  2. Seek a therapist trained in prenatal massage who knows proper positioning (e.g., side-lying or with a pregnancy pillow).
  3. Avoid deep tissue or pressure on certain areas (e.g., around the ankles, wrists, and abdomen).
  4. Stay hydrated and avoid overheating during the session.
